What’s the difference between aliyas neshamah (soul ascent) versus “clinical death” (N.D.E.), which are both the soul leaving the body?
ANSWER:
Aliyas neshamah takes place in the soul’s level of thought. Every soul ascent takes place in the soul’s thoughts, as explained in sefer Shaarei Kedushah (III), by the Gra and in many Rishonim, and explained extensively in sefer B’Tiv Yerushalayim. By contrast, “clinical death” is where part of the soul actually escapes the body.
